Dutch Olympic committee says ‘hold fire’ on 2028 plans

The Dutch Olympic Committee NOC*NSF wants the cabinet to stop discussing plans to host the Olympics in 2028, fearing the debate about the cost of the event is too dominant, the Volkskrant reports on Tuesday.

‘We think the discussion about a possible bid should not take place until 2016 at the earliest, and that is what we have told the sports ministry,’ NOC*NSF director Gerard Dielessen is quoted as saying.
The committee says the ongoing discussion about the cost of staging the Olympics, 100 years after the 1928 Amsterdam games, is distracting from the real aim: to create a positive climate for sport in the Netherlands.
MPs are due to debate the cost of staging the games on Tuesday. Sports minister Edith Schippers has been accused of concealing from parliament the true cost of hosting the Olympics – put at €8bn.
