Unemployment rises in Q3Thursday 20 October 2011 The Dutch unemployment rate rose by some 15,000 people to 5.6% in the third quarter of this year, after remaining stable in the first six months, the national statistics office CBS said on Thursday. Both men and women are being equally hard hit this time round, the CBS said. During the credit crisis, more men lost their jobs as traditional industries and the construction sector lost ground. But now the healthcare sector is being more reluctant to take on new staff and the civil service job cuts are also beginning to bite. Nevertheless, the Dutch unemployment rate is still among the lowest in Europe, where the average is 10%. Consumer confidence has also fallen in the third quarter, the CBS said. © DutchNews.nl
Free speech only exists here if it is a) not against the queen, and b) not against Wilders (remember the teenagers who dared to 'rap' against him) By osita | October 20, 2011 10:11 PM visitor: mostly I like your comments, but this one doesn't make any sense, sorry. By Bill | October 21, 2011 8:11 AM 5.6% does not represent the true unemployment figures, because the government cuts off benefits to couples whereby one partner is working and the other is not, but taken together they earn more than the means-tested minimum. In reality, the numbers are far higher, they just choose to count unemployment differently than elsewhere. By Caycu | October 21, 2011 10:28 AM osita: after the NL election circus last year, I failed to notice the difference between the guv & head of state - that being one and the same. By the visitor | October 21, 2011 1:21 PM @Osita: I mostly agree, but sadly, in NL there is free speech as long as you give good news. I never see any harsh critique of the situation here or of the government. In fact even this article must end on the note "Nevertheless, the Dutch unemployment rate is still among the lowest in Europe, where the average is 10%" which is a way to keep people content (not happy), whereas the problem is the trend in unempliyment. This sounds so sweet, seeing as NL is one of the smallest & most overcrowded & 'coffee-shopped' countries in the world.
With an anti-racist, liberal & more broadminded guv in service 'For the people' & not just their selfish 'careers', NL unemployment would be lower than figures stated.
(Funny (Sadly) that an ancient book continues to interfere & add to NL's economic & social problems.)
Many years ago, one could have been burnt at the stake for heresy, or executed for treason for such comments as these: thank goodness for free speech!
