Transport smart card has cut metro violence

The number of violent incidents recorded on Amsterdam’s metro has fallen by almost 40% since paper tickets were phased out, news agency ANP reports on Monday.


Since the public transport smart card (ov-chipkaart) has been the only way to pay for a ticket, the percentage of fair dodgers has fallen from 14% to 4%, the city’s transport authority says.
People without tickets are responsible for a high proportion of violent incidents when caught or when they try to evade capture by, for example, smashing through gates, ANP says.,
