The 33-year-old joined Real in summer 2006 but was dogged by injuries last season and has spent much of this season on the bench.
Van Nistelrooy is now moving to Hamburger SV on a free transfer.
‘I’m very happy that everything has worked out,’ the former Manchester United striker told website Uefa.com. ‘I’m looking forward to Monday, when I will be arriving in Hamburg. Hamburg are a great club with a strong team and high expectations. I have high expectations as well.’
