Amsterdam hospital opens swine flu clinic

Wednesday 12 August 2009

The Slotervaart hospital in Amsterdam on Wednesday opened an out-patients clinic specifically for swine flu.

People who are worried that they have the virus can go to the clinic to be tested or can be referred by their family doctor, according to press reports.

Clinic staff can inform patients within an hour whether they have a high chance of having the virus and a definitive outcome is available within one day.

Meanwhile the pharmacists association KNMP has joined the government’s public health institute RIVM in warning the public against taking the anti-virus drug Tamiflu as a preventative measure.

In principle, the drug can only be taken for six weeks and will not work after this period, a spokeswoman for the KNMP is quoted as saying in the media.
