University scraps Islamic student lecture
Friday 16 January 2009
Amsterdam University has cancelled a meeting of the Islamic students organisation Al Furqan because men and women will separated for the event, the NRC reports on Friday.
The meeting was to include a lecture on the war in Gaza with speaker Okay Pala saying the creation of an Islamic state is the only solution, the paper claims.
Pala is a member of the radical Islamic movement Hizb ut-Tahrir which is banned in several countries, the paper said.
A university official stressed that Al Furqan is not attached to the university but had simply rented a meeting room.
