Monday 26 May 2008
Valery Gergiev took his final bow as conductor-in-chief of the Rotterdam Philharmonic on Sunday and was presented with the prestigious Johan van Oldebarnevelt medal.
Gergiev, one of the world's most acclaimed conductors, moves to the London Symphony Orchestra.
In Friday's Volkskrant he warned the Netherlands that unless it changed its policy towards its symphony orchestras, it would no longer be considered in the premier division of classical music.
