Minister pledges action on transport card

Friday 18 January 2008

Transport minister Tineke Huizinga has pledged to draw up a plan to tackle problems surrounding the introduction of the new public transport smart card (ov-chipkaart).

The minister told MPs in an emergency debate on the crisis yesterday that she would take full responsibility for her role in the affair.

Hackers have shown the card to be vulnerable and privacy watchdogs say too many personal details are being stored. And trials with the new card have resulted in thousands of travellers paying too much for their journeys.

The card is supposed to replace paper tickets on all train, bus and tram journeys in 2009.
