Elections for the provincial councils

About provincial government

Executive tasks are carried out by a 'board' known as the Gedeputeerde Staten.

Provincial councils are chaired by the Commissaris van de Koningin or queen's commissioner – a crown appointee with a six-year tenure.

The main job of the provincial councils are:

Regional planning
Regional roads and cycle routes
Regional welfare and cultural issues
Environmental and water management, regional transport
Stimulating the regional economy
Regulation of local authorities, particularly in terms of finances
Regulation of the water boards

Provinces are largely funded by national government but also get money from local taxes and road tax. Some also get EU funding.
