Opera in the Cinema
In 1868 the French composer Ambroise Thomas wrote an opera based on Shakespeare's Hamlet which was considered a travesty of the play, particularly because it had a happy ending. The opera was rediscovered in 1980 and the ending rewritten so that Hamlet dies, although not in the way he does in the play. This version, directed by Patrice Caurier and Moshe Zeiser, has a much-admired performance by Simon Keenlyside as Hamlet.
