Edward and Nancy Kienholz
The Hoerengracht (Whores' Canal) by Edward and Nancy Kienholz makes its first appearance in the Netherlands. Created in the mid-1980s, it is a recreation of Amsterdam's red-light district, complete with scantily-dressed and garishly lit mannequins. This huge installation is a succession of streets where you can look inside the windows and doorways and see the rooms. The impression is one of tawdriness and degradation but Nancy Kienholz's touch shows a great deal of sympathy for these women.
Amsterdam Historic Museum, Amsterdam until August 29.
