World Press Photo winner 'represents the Arab Spring' Spanish photographer Samuel Aranda has won this year's main World Press Photo award for his picture of a woman swathed in black, holding a member of her family who had been injured during protests in Yemen. The photograph was taken in a mosque that was transformed into a field hospital to deal with the injured. The World Press Photo is a Dutch competition. The photograph speaks for the entire region, the jury said. 'It represents Yemen, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and Syria and everything which is taking place in the Arabic Spring,' the jury says. 'But it also shows the intimate side of what has happened.' In total, the jury awarded prizes in nine categories to 57 photographers from 24 countries. © DutchNews.nl Get the DutchNews.nl newsletter in your mailbox: Click here to subscribe
This is really an emotionally moving amazing photo to me. Looking at it humbles me and makes me realize just how small and insignificant all my stupid little problems and issues really are. Thank you Samuel Aranda. By Bill | February 14, 2012 7:17 AM @Bill. Nice comment. Additionally, in the light of recent events regarding the Dutch witch-hunt of Eastern Europeans, we have archives, full, of equally heart wrenching memory's. I do hope that one day soon, we will not find ourselves, once again, fighting tirrany and ignorance. By Highlander | February 14, 2012 4:15 PM
