Canadian French fry maker McCain has taken a majority stake in Dutch snack maker Van Geloven, which includes Mona croquettes on its menu.

Four years ago, rival snack maker Royaan attempted to take over the company but that floundered on competition grounds. Van Geloven was taken over last year by British private equity group TowerBrook Capital which is retaining a minority stake.

Van Geloven, which booked sales of €197m last year, also owns the bitterball maker De Bourgondier and sate specialist Hebro.

Director Peter Doodeman said the deal will allow Van Geloven to expand elsewhere in Europe and benefit from the Canadian firm’s worldwide network.

Financial details were not disclosed.
