Traffic offence fines to be overhauled: justice minister

a10 amsterdam road traffic jamThe system of fines for traffic offences is to be overhauled so that repeat offenders get hit harder, justice minister Ard van der Steur has told parliament.

The minister is to discuss the issue with police and public prosecution department officials, news agency ANP reports. ‘As far as I am concerned, we have lots of options,’ the minister said.

One idea under consideration is to confiscate cars which are not insured. Another is to increase the fines for persistent offenders, as suggested on Thursday by the Labour party.

Van der Steur said he hoped to have drawn up a package of measures before the end of the year.
