Breda football club NAC appears to have been saved from bankruptcy after the city council agreed to lower the rent on its stadium by €325,000 a year.

The city is also to invest considerably in stadium maintenance, regional paper BN De Stem reports on Wednesday.

The club leases the stadium back from the city at €1.2m a year after selling it to the council in 2003 for nearly €16m to stave off bankruptcy.

‘A majority of the council think this is the only option,’ city alderman Alfred Arbouw told the paper.

Despite years of spending cuts, the club is structurally €700,000 short of the necessary budget and has debts of €12m, due to having fewer sponsors and selling fewer season tickets.
