Refugee children in the Netherlands move home once a year

Thursday 31 January 2013

The children of asylum seekers move home on average once for every year they are in the Netherlands, according to a new report by refugee groups.

This is 10 times as often as the average Dutch child, the research by VluchtelingenWerk Nederland, Unicef and Defence for Children shows.

In addition, most refugee children only discover they are moving shortly before it happens, so they have little time to adjust or deal with associated problems, news agency ANP quotes the report as saying.

The report will be formally presented to junior justice minister Fred Teeven on Thursday.
