Salmonella outbreak probably comes from Greek fish

The smoked salmon that has made hundreds of people ill with salmonella in the Netherlands and the US may well have come from Greece, the Dutch fish producer Foppen said on Tuesday afternoon.
Foppen has stopped production of its smoked salmon in its Dutch and Greek factories while it investigates. No traces of salmonella were found in the Dutch factory and the fish producer is now inspecting the six production lines at its Greek plant, the Telegraaf reports.
The public health authority has issued a warning to consumers not to eat any salmon prepared by Foppen and advised supermarkets to take the product off their shelves.
So far around 200 Dutch and 100 Americans have contracted salmonella.
A Foppen spokesman told the Telegraaf no compensation claims have yet been received. 'We need to arrange something for everything cleared from supermarkets and products in people's refrigerators at home,' the spokesman said. 'But the priority is to find the source of the infection so we can restart the production.'
