Parliamentary chairwoman takes lead in forming new cabinet

Fears that the process of forming a new government after the September 12 election will be chaotic may be tempered now parliamentary chairwoman Gerdi Verbeet is planning to kick start the process earlier than expected.

The new MPs are not due to be sworn in until a week after the vote, leading many to suggest the delay will further complicate the process, which is being radically changed this year.
Last year, MPs voted to end the queen’s role in forming a new government. Traditionally, Beatrix holds individual meetings with all the party leaders and then appoints an independent person to begin putting a new government together.
Instead, parliament is to have the upper hand an vote on an formateur to do the political groundwork between the various parties.
Telephone
Nos television says Verbeet is now planning to have telephone contact with all the party leaders on Thursday afternoon, to begin the process of sounding out opinion. Then, if all sides agree, there can be a more formal meeing, the NRC says.
Critics of the new system say there will be a loss of transparency about the formation process.
Verbeet herself is quitting politics after the general election and will leave parliament with all the other outgoing MPs on Wednesday September 19.
