Number of children in care doubles in five years

The number of youngsters needing specialised care doubled between 2005 and 2010, according to research by the children’s organisation Kinderen in Tel.

In 2005, nearly 44,000 youngsters under the age of 17 were put into special care. In 2010, the figure had risen to nearly 85,000. The organisation does not give a reason for the rise, reports Trouw.
It does point out that troubled youngsters are not confined to the big cities. Noord-Brabant and Flevoland top the list of provinces with the largest number of young people in special care.
The organisation says more research is now needed to find out the reason for the rise, including why some provinces do not show an increase in numbers.
