Confusion over signing of ritual slaughter convenant

The covenant on ritual slaughter is due to be signed by all parties on Tuesday but there is still confusion over who will lead the commission set up to oversee its conditions, reports Trouw.

Originally, ritual slaughter was to be banned. However, following an outcry from Jewish and Muslim organisations, farm minister Henk Bleker came up with a compromise: Ritual slaughter would be allowed if it could be proved animals do not suffer more than in an ordinary abbatoir.
A covenant was drawn up and a commission appointed to oversee ritual slaughterhouses and decide whether it was acceptable or not in each case.
However, the Dutch-Jewish organisation NIK was unhappy at the appointment of vet Ludo Hellebrekers as chairman of the commission. Hellebrekers says he believes ritual slaughter is about animal welfare, not freedom of religion or the interpretation of religious laws.
According to Trouw, minister Bleker says he will now chair the commission himself. But Hellebrekers told the paper nothing about the commission will change, although Bleker will chair the meeting on Tuesday when the signing of the covenant should take place.
