MPs call for debate on Olympic costs

MPs from across the political spectrum have called for a debate on the likely cost of the Netherlands staging the 2028 Olympics after RTL news said the price tag could be as high as €8bn.

The Netherlands has to decide by 2016 whether to submit a bid to stage the games. Research by RTL news into government documents showed civil servants believe the bill could reach €8bn. However the figure had been ‘deliberately withheld’ from MPs because of ‘the negative consequences it might have on support for the games’.
Briefings to MPs about the games had not given any figures because the ‘uncertainty is so great, 17 years ahead of the event,’ a spokesman for sports minister Edith Schippers told the Volkskrant.
