Facebook, health minister and police win Big Brother awards

Social networking website Facebook, health minister Edith Schippers and the national police service KLPD are the winners of the 2011 Big Brother awards for infringing on citizens’ privacy, the Telegraaf reports on Thursday.

Schippers was given her award for ‘forcing through’ a private effort to centralise digital patient records, even though the senate rejected the plan.
Facebook took the company award for listing on the stock exchange with all its users’ private information, while the police took the government award for its controversial use of spyware in criminal investigations.
The awards are organised by the Bits of Freedom internet group.
