13 cents of each euro spent went to the state in 2010

Thirteen cents out of every euro spent by Dutch households in 2010 went to the state, according to new research by national statistics office CBS.

That year, households spent an average of €32,500, of which €4,320 went to the treasury in the form of indirect taxes. Some 60% of that was value-added tax (btw).
The CBS said high income families tend to spend less on tobacco, alcohol and soft drinks, which is why their index taxation level is relatively low compared with poorer households. They also tend to spend more on tax-free services such as education and sport.
