Mitsubishi to pull out of Europe, 1,500 jobs threatened in Limburg

Japanese car maker Mitsubishi Motors is stopping all production in Europe next year, including the building of cars at the Nedcar plant in Born, where 1,500 people work.

A spokeswoman for the company in Tokyo blamed the ‘difficult business climate’ for the decision, news agency ANP said.
Nedcar is the biggest car-making plant in the country and currently produces the Mitsubishi Colt.

MPs have called for ‘maximum government involvement’ in keeping the Limburg-based operation open.
Suat Koetloe of manufacturing union De Unie said the decision to close is a ‘horror scenario’. He told ANP Mitsubishi had confirmed to him no other vehicles would be built in Born.
‘This is a slap in the face for all the 1,500 workers who work in Born,’ he said.
The future of the Born operation has been in doubt for several years. Last year, management called for a pay cut of between 2% and 5% to keep the factory profitable.
According to the Telegraaf, Mitsubishi is looking at different options for the plant, including selling it to a third party.
