Friday 20 January 2012

Salvage experts plan to try to refloat a ship which has run aground off the coast of Wijk aan Zee, close to the entrance to IJmuiden port, Nos television reports.

It had first seemed that weather conditions would prevent the attempt to free the ship, but experts now hope to be able to refloat it today, rather than wait for high tide on Saturday afternoon.

It is still unclear why the ship, sailing under the Philippines flag, ran aground. The 21-strong crew remain on board but helicopters and life boats are on standby if an emergency evacuation becomes necessary, a coastguard spokesman said.
