Royal couple finally sells holiday home

Prince Willem-Alexander and princess Máxima have finally sold their holiday home in Mozambique, more than two years after having promised to do so, prime minister Mark Rutte told parliament in a briefing on Monday evening.

The villa was built for them as part of a property development in the African country but there was a wave of negative publicity about the project in November 2009, including claims of corruption, environmental damage and a lack of benefits for the local population.

The couple spent two years trying to sell the villa, estimated to be worth €2m. They have now sold it back to the property developer for 'a symbolic price', Rutte said. He did not give details because 'a holiday home for a member of the royal family is a private matter'.
