Let dual nationality Dutch expats stay Dutch, MPs tell minister

Dutch expats who take a second nationality while working abroad should not lose their original Dutch passport, MPs are set to tell home affairs minister Piet Hein Donner, the Telegraaf reports on Friday.

A group of expats in the US sounded the alarm last month, when it emerged new Dutch rules on dual nationality will also affect them.
The government wants to limit dual nationality and says people who become Dutch citizens should have to give up their original passports. But this will also hit Dutch expats who live and work abroad and who have taken a second nationality because it is convenient.
Abandoned
Opposition MPs, supported by the ruling VVD, have called on Donner to have a rethink. Dutch nationals with two passports ‘are being abandoned by their own country’, they say.
In fact we are saying ‘we don’t want you any more’ at a time when we should be proud of all those Dutch people who work abroad,’ Labour MP Martijn van Dam told the paper. ‘They are ambassadors for the Netherlands.’
The draft legislation , which also makes it harder to become Dutch, is currently being assessed by the Council of State.
