Britain ‘is open to’ Dutch EU citizen integration plans

Britain is open to the Dutch government’s ambition to make agreements on the integration of EU nationals, according to a home affairs ministry statement.

The British position follows a meeting between home affairs minister Piet Hein Donner, Britain’s home secretary Theresa May and immigration minister Damian Green.
The cabinet is keen to extend the compulsory integration courses for non-EU nationals to people from some parts of Europe. ‘Both the Netherlands and Britain consider the integration of people from central and eastern Europe to be an important issue,’ the statement says.
Britain has welcomed Dutch plans to organise a meeting on this theme, the ministry says.
Compulsory integration courses for EU citizens would conflict with the right to free movement of people and require a change in EU law.
