Soft drug plan will mean 6 out of 10 coffee shops must close: NRC

If the new government goes ahead with plans to shut all cannabis cafes which are less than 350 metres from a school, six out of 10 will close down, according to research by the NRC.

The government is due to publish a green paper on drugs later this month. This will include plans to introduce passes for so-called coffee shops where locals can buy small quantities of soft drugs. It will also flesh out plans to shut cafes which are too close to schools.
If the government sticks to its earlier pledge to close coffee shops within 350 metres walking distance from all types of school, 187 of Amsterdam’s 223 coffee shops will shut down, the paper says.
Amsterdam city council is strongly opposed to the government’s plans, arguing they will encourage street dealers.
