Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague public transport strike looms

Wednesday 19 January 2011

Public transport firms in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague are to strike mid February in protest at government plans to put their services out to public tender.

The cabinet expects privatising public transport services will save some €120m.

Ger Geldhof of the works council at Amsterdam's bus and tram company GVB told news agency ANP he expects the contracts to be given to two big foreign players. Hundreds of jobs are also at stake, Geldhof says.

Who will benefit from this theoretical savings? Not those who lose their jobs or their families and certainly not to the consumers who will be using those systems. I have have noticed with the new post service that I pay more and receive less service and quality for my money. A concerned taxpayer.

As a daily user of GVB I say bring it on if it means offering customer service - something that GVB do not currently provide

Privating public transit has NEVER worked. The system is already weak and unstable. Do we really want to make it crumble?

Oh, yes, look how well privatising public transport has worked in the UK - NOT!

Why is there an assumption that jobs will be lost? Apart from the bosses, any new transport operator will need to hire workers, and if they are competitive and well-skilled, there is no reason why existing staff will not be hired by any new private sector operator.

The gov't is more interested in providing profit making opportunities to corporations than ensuring that we have reliable affordable public transport. Didnt they promise that the Health care costs would go down when it was privatized? Sadly, Government cannot be trusted, regardless of who has power.

Privatizing has absolutely failed miserably in the US, the UK and many other places. So why does the current Dutch government continue to copy policies and strategies that are proven to fail? I wish someone that voted for these idiots could please answer that for me.
