Wilders is a 'golden pompadoured maverick': Wikileaks

Wednesday 15 December 2010

Geert Wilders is a 'golden-pompadoured, maverick' who is 'no friend of the US', according to a briefing document on Dutch politics for US president Barack Obama, put together in July 2009.

The document, published by whistleblower website Wikileaks and hosted by the Guardian, was drawn up by US diplomats to brief Obama ahead of his meeting with the then prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende.

In the document, the US official states: 'Wilders is no friend of the US: he opposes Dutch military involvement in Afghanistan; he believes development assistance is money wasted; he opposes NATO missions outside 'allied' territory; he is against most EU initiatives; and, most troubling, he forments fear and hatred of immigrants.' .

Other documents which mention Wilders look at preparations to combat the effect of his anti-Koran film Fitna prior to its release in 2008.

Actually, there is plenty of evidence that foreign development aid is wasted - much of it disappears into dictators' Swiss bank accounts. As to the war in Afghanistan - a lot of Americans don't understand its purpose except to make good on a half-hearted campaign promise by then-candidate Obama.
If Wilders disagrees with some of Obama's priorities, that does not make him anti-American; rather the opposite.

ooooh, a maverick with lofty hair; as I recall, George Bush was often called such -- the maverick part, that is; Obama and his gang are such pussies; heaven forbid anybody should step out of line and speak their mind; any comments in those cables about how much of a freakin' loser Obama is?

It sounds like Wilders is not a friend of the Obama administration. That's not necessarily the same as not being a friend of America.

Wilders can be forgiven for his "cut-and-run" policy toward Afghanistan. The present strategy is slow flawed, the net benefit of western operations there is barely positive.

Poppy prohibition policy is counter-productive in three ways:

1. western money is wasted
2. Taliban is subsidized
3. rural population is alienated.

Western operations in Afghanistan should be self-financing, by purchasing the entire poppy crop directly from farmers, and selling to medical dispensaries around the world.

The ancients understood well, that their foreign ventures should not be subsidized, but rather should be self-sustaining.

I am an American but my Dutch roots run deep...very deep for over the last 1000 years. I support Mr Wilders and what he stands for . My only shame is that I cant vote for him!!

That's funny. As an American, I can state that it is Obama that is clearly no friend to the USA. God Bless Geert and all freedom-loving Dutch people.

Interesting to see so many right-oriented people here. Wilders has many flaws, one is his anti immigration policies in a country that literally NEEDS immigrants as no young men/women are truly doing their part. His anti Afghanistan involvement is good though.
