Telegraaf tv stations kick off, public broadcaster revamped

Two new public broadcasting companies start operations on Monday as the five-yearly shake-up in the Dutch tv and radio system gets under way.

PowNed and WNL are both owned by the Telegraaf media group. WNL has launched a daily breakfast show while PowNed will broadcast its own news show at 22.45 hours Monday to Friday and Hard Gras, a football magazine programme.
The old public broadcasters’ current affairs and news output is also being rejigged. Nova and Network disappear and there will be a new daily current affairs show Newsuur.
Public system
The Dutch Publieke Omroep (OP), or public broadcasting system, is funded partly by advertising and partly by the treasury.
The numerous public broadcasting companies (including AVRO, BNN, KRO, NCRV, TROS, VARA and VPRO) provide programming for three national television and five radio stations as well as digital channels.
The broadcasters all have a specific religious, political or social slant and their airtime is allocated according to how many members they have. Llink, a broadcasting company which focused on green issues, has lost its place in the system.
