The commission says it has been ‘swamped’ with complaints from Haarlem prisoners who say they do not get enough to eat – a microwave meal and six slices of bread a day, the Volkskrant reports on Monday.
A spokesman for the prison service told the paper that prison meals are now being provided by a new central supplier. Haarlem switched to the new supplier on July 1.
‘Some prisoners may get less to eat,’ the spokesman said. ‘But they still get a balanced diet. The basic food package is in line with government guidelines and includes two pieces of fruit a day.’
