Freedom and responsibility is right-wing government slogan

Thursday 30 September 2010

The three parties on the verge of forming a new coalition government unveiled their coalition agreement on Thursday, under the motto 'freedom and responsibility'.

The aim of the agreement is to give the Netherlands back to the hardworking Dutchman, VVD leader and prime ministerial hopeful Mark Rutte said.

The pact is the result of two months of negotiations between the Christian Democrats, right-wing VVD and anti-Islam PVV. The PVV will support the VVD and CDA on a number of issues but will not have ministers and is not officially part of the government.

The agreement includes a ban on the burqa, the introduction of 'animal cops' and a reduction in the minimum wage

'This agreement's approach should lead to a... 50% reduction in the inflow non-western immigrants,' PVV leader Geert Wilders said.

Christian Democrat MPs are still divided on whether or not to support the coalition agreement.

After 15 hours of discussion on Wednesday, the 21 members of parliament have decided to leave the decision up to Saturday’s congress. At least two MPs are known to oppose an alliance with Gert Wilders' party

Harworking what? Come to the UK, we will show you work ethic!

    By Fashion Guru | September 30, 2010 4:25 PM

    Dear hard-working foreigner...consider this.
Every cent you pay in tax will be managed by those who would rather see you gone, who would split up your family, who want to completely ostracize you. Time for the black economy to become a whole lot blacker. Hit them where it hurts.

    By Edward Ka-Spel | September 30, 2010 4:37 PM

A rather disgusting-looking lot that is. And how is this new immigration minister going to look after the 5-year temporary citizenship processes when such processes can't even identify the actual Dutch-born Dutch citizens that are currently living overseas.
The whole process looks like a farce and a dangerous one at that.

"The smoking ban in small cafes and bars will be lifted"

Wonderful, now I can start to avoid cafes again!

    By Mattias | September 30, 2010 5:57 PM

How is cutting the minimum wage going to boost the hardworking dutchman?

I have never ever seen such a racist agenda - I'm sure that many VVD and CDA voters are recoiling in horror at this 'agreement'. Never has the Netherlands looked more like Nazi Germany than in this moment.

Thank goodness half of this will never get past the european courts - it's going to be a very lucrative year for the lawyers.

    By osita | September 30, 2010 6:26 PM

The agreement looks very good, and should be popular with the Dutch public. The other commenters sound a bit crazy!

    By willy | September 30, 2010 7:37 PM

There is no a single sector of our society that is not attacked by any measure of Wilders' cabinet (with Rutte employed as temporary PM). Childhood, middle class, elderly, pensioners, workers, foreigners. All and each of them are victims of at least a measure specially designed against them. Also the foundations for the development of the country are attacked: education, healthcare and trading.
    In exchange for what?
What benefits brings this Wilders' cabinet to the second economy into the EU in terms of growth and lowest deficit, and the first one in terms of lowest unemployment? Independently of social conflicts, international discredit and loss of needed labor, I mean.

    By zenplus | September 30, 2010 7:41 PM

A cursory look says here could be a government that is not ashamed of being Dutch. Coments that even vaguely mention Nazis with this coalition is a slap in the face to millions of Jewish people that know the difference, remarks like that show ignorance of facts.

"Cannabis cafes will become members-only clubs with a pass system."

In other words, "We don't hate only immigrants. We hate tourists, too."

"Parents to me made (financially) responsible for making sure their children speak Dutch properly." - that would be interested to see, how will they implement that?

"Spending on arts and culture to be cut" - that's just great... (NOT!!!)

I wonder if half the people knew what they were voting for...

    By stingo | September 30, 2010 8:04 PM

Yay! To the smoking ban being lifted! Now they need to let ALL bar owners decide whether they want to have a smoking policy or not!

    By Me | September 30, 2010 8:52 PM

Just as I thought, yet an even more selfish guv around the corner.
Of course the guv has 2 take action concerning the huge deficit, but screwing the the people (surviving) on the lowest incomes is despicable. Another ultra right-wing screw-up?
If the people that R living already on minimum income cannot manage now, how will they survive in a few years from now?
I have always managed to live well on high or low income by adjusting my life style. Many people cannot!I did not vote for this coalition, nor will I support it, more than 3 months of wasted talks!I will always vote and support any guv that genuinely cares for it's people (NONE!)

    By stevie | September 30, 2010 9:30 PM

Some, wait, no, MOST of these measures are just insane. Lets hope the CDA congress votes against joining this coalition and we can go back to the polling booths again.

    By Marc | September 30, 2010 11:32 PM

wow lm in shocked. this looks very good, it can lead to development of personal responsibilty instead of state responsibility - we get to act like adults instead of being treated like children

    By flaedo | September 30, 2010 11:50 PM

If there ever was a spiritual truth "No freedom, without responsibility" would be it. Maybe the Netherlands will become the next country that will see the value of the constitution of the USA. Great. A lot of people will have to start thinking and acting for themselves now in stead of relying on government handouts.

    By houteklomp | October 1, 2010 2:05 AM

Some of The main measures in the coalition accord sound great but as far as cutting minimum wage, that wont sit well nor will it even be a law that can be passed. Some other laws that will be introduced are not even feasible with international laws or EU laws and is only wishful thinking unless, of course we want to give up our EU membership and stop being an export country etc. As far as animal police, FINALLY someone is for animal rights! I admire VVD, PVV for most of their ideas, but we have to be realistic about what we are able to really pass as far as laws goes that meet international standards and Eu laws.

    By SandraV | October 1, 2010 5:14 AM

"The aim of the agreement is to give the Netherlands back to the hardworking Dutchman,"

Oh good, when they find him I hope he knows how to manage the country.

    By Louise | October 1, 2010 7:14 AM

I find it fascinating that so many commenters(mostly Dutch) who agree with the coalition policies don't actually say "why" it's so wonderful or address any of the points from those who do they why they are against them. It's just "this is great!"

And I wonder why these same people, if they are so anti-immigrant, are on an expat site written in English if they aren't going to expand upon their vague comments.

Are you here merely to provoke or to discuss? And what do you say to the Dutch nationals who don't agree with you? I hate to say it, but they are out there...

    By CW | October 1, 2010 8:24 AM

there's not much to say about this after reading "The aim of the agreement is to give the Netherlands back to the hardworking Dutchman". is there any doubts that this government's plan is racist ? how about hard working foreigners that paid tons of tax for Netherlands. very nice to see that we're no more welcomed.

    By Ozz | October 1, 2010 8:52 AM

So this shows clearly who is the Prime Minister in this coalition. Someone who will rule the country from not being in the government itself. That's the most powerful PM you will ever see. You can see how many are his ideas from the list.

"Benefit cuts for people whose clothing or behaviour stops them finding work" - Who are you targeting here?? is that part of the freedom slogan?

If the CDA congress accepts these measures, then it is better to let Wilders be the PM, instead of a powerless Ruthe who will have to be at the mercy of Wilders for every decision.

    By Western Expat | October 1, 2010 9:21 AM

"Further investment in ties with Israel"
The country with the largest number of UN resolutions against it? Oh dear, and at a time when even the US is getting tired of Israel's excessive behaviour.

    By AC | October 1, 2010 10:06 AM

This can not be the agenda of a democratically elected government. When I was reading it, I felt this is the agenda of an invisible occupying force, who on the name of "immigration and Islam" are invading the lower middle class, irrespective of western or none western. Because a law is a law and when they implement it, it will be equally for all. The "immigration and islam" slogans now clearly sounds like "weapons of mass destruction and terrorism". Is netherlands going to be the third country after Iraq and Afghanistan, invaded by strange ideologies.

    By jerry | October 1, 2010 10:17 AM

This should be a fun winter!

If you ban face coverings then you have to ban them all... I have a face mask like hat for my son for the winter.. it only shows his eyes. I guess that's illegal too and it SHOULD be because otherwise it would be discrimination to the muslims, right?

I hate this country now.. I wish I could leave but I can't (and no, I'm not muslim).

    By LJK | October 1, 2010 10:22 AM

Well, here i am: a working foreigner in this land.

5 years ago i paid with my own money the language school and then i went directly to work. I didn't cried for money, home, clothing and so on and i made my own life, like i was teached to do in my own country.

And i don't want that my tax money goes to people that only want and doesn't give.

And please, don't look just at the forigners...i know some lazy Dutch people that are abusing the system exactly like their forigner counterparts.

    By Andreas | October 1, 2010 10:34 AM

Why not spend more on children? It seems this government has NO idea what the public want. We need to make it clear in the next election.

    By Ames | October 1, 2010 10:56 AM

Is it just me or does anyone else notice that the good citizens of the Netherlands never seem to rally and openly protest when things are not to thier liking?'It's all belly up and choke it down, but the whining continues.

    By AW | October 1, 2010 11:21 AM

This is great news for the Netherlands -really! I think the "Wilders government" (because that is what it is, make no mistake), will finally be able to show its intrinsic racisms in practice, lose lots of money in courts, lower Dutch reputation in the world. But only until the next elections, when voters will know better! Yes - good to give him a chance to ruin the country. It can always be re-built afterwards again. Only by mistakes one learns. and BTW: until now 2 promises: VVD: government by 1 July and PVV: AOW must stay 65... were these kept yet (even before the government began its work??)

    By dvd | October 1, 2010 12:08 PM

Finally, a government that listens to what the People want, not the arrogant elites and the special interests.

The funny thing is that the CDA wants this as much as PVV -- but its elite leaders needed political cover because they have been complicit in the delusional game that the left wing "culture enhancers" have been forcing upon the Netherlands for the past 40 years.

Women and Gays, rejoice -- no longer will the government allow open bigotry against us any more by the "culture enhancers"!

    By commenter | October 1, 2010 1:06 PM

cannabis cafes members only ? take out membership, if dutch nationals only, go elsewhere (another country). cutting the minimum wage ? one more step to slave labour. what happened to white women who once wore headscarves (in the 1950's & 60's ?)... hey here's one for wilders compulsorary perms, and then when the woman doesn't want her perm trashed by a north sea gale = headscarf. work that out. what happened to the rights of the labour voters ! blown out of the window, just like 1000's of others.

    By OWL | October 1, 2010 2:24 PM

wow, is this the package that provides the definition of freedom, tolerance and hardwork? (NOT)

Our economy professor @ TU Delft once said: If you pay with peanuts, then you get monkeys...What will be the future of the Dutch population then?

    = Integrated Dutch speaking monkeys.

    By wow | October 1, 2010 2:33 PM

The Netherlands used to be world renouned for tolerance and progress.

    No more.

The Netherlands used to be a progressive place where anybody who worked hard could make a decent living that would pay their expenses.

    No more.

It is time for a revolution people, I cannot believe that the majority of us want what this government is proposing. Rise up and MAKE these racist fear-mongers treat ALL people with respect.

    By Vrolijk | October 1, 2010 8:52 PM

Sorry to be pessimistic, but I think that the disgusting mindset of this fascist coalition is here to stay. Very interesting polls at https://n8.noties.nl/peil.nl. It shows that the discriminatory measures in the akkoord have widespread support. Some of them have the support of a majority of voters in every party except GroenLinks. Sigh :(

    By Rob | October 3, 2010 8:25 AM

This new ideology will encourage segregation that already exists. Worse, still, It will also encourage terrorist attacks because, Wilders is already a target, and a recent renewed threat has been made against him. Unfortunately, the more extremist factions will not tolerate Wilders remarks. Why antagonize, and encourage terrorism in this unsafe world?

    By Highlander | October 3, 2010 10:23 AM

That's ridiculous! Cannabis cafes is the only reason why the Netherlands is so touristic!!! Why would you make them members' only???

    By Glux | October 3, 2010 5:13 PM

As Italian, after having seen the latest Italian government, I thought I've seen them all and was happy to be living in NL, but after reading this proposal, I am horrified and not longer want to rise my child in this country!

It's not wise to cut the budget of educational and cultural activities.
What's wrong with Netherlands? Do you think elderlies are going to build the future of this country?
