Food safety inspectors closed 23 kitchens in 2009

Monday 20 September 2010

Food safety inspectors shut down 23 catering establishments and suppliers last year because they were so dirty there was a risk to public health.

In total 168 eateries and food preparation companies were under special supervision last year because of very poor hygiene standards.

Inspectors were given the right to order cafés and restaurants to close down last year. Previously they needed a court order.

In total, the inspectors visited 35,000 cafes and restaurants and handed out thousands of fines, their 2009 annual report shows.
