Four day walk start brought forward to 3am

Tuesday’s start of the four-day Nijmegen walk has been brought forward to 0300 hours because of the expected heat, the event organisers said on Monday.

Walkers planning to complete 50 km a day have the earliest start, with the 40 km and 30 km walkers beginning before 0600 hours.
The 41,000 participants have also been urged to make sure they drink enough during the walk. In 2006, two walkers died and the event was eventually cancelled because of the heat.
The Vierdaagse – or four-day march – was originally a military exercise, launched in 1909 to keep soldiers fit after the introduction of motor vehicles. The Nijmegen event is the biggest.
