Europe is deadlocked over allowing GM crops and just two have been authorised over the past 12 years. Verburg supports GM agriculture and says the commission decision is a breakthrough.
‘We are very pleased,’ the minister’s spokesman said. ‘This will make it possible to break the deadlock… The commission has already begun procedures to allow in new GM crops.’
The proposal will next be put to the European parliament.
