VVD good for budget deficit, Labour better for spending power

The Liberal party (VVD) election manifesto contains the best measures for cutting the budget deficit and creating jobs, but Labour and the Socialist Party’s plans are the only ones to boost spending power, the CPB said on Thursday.

The macro-economic forecasting agency traditionally analyses all the party manifestos in the run up to a general election to assess their likely impact on the economy and employment.
The CPB presents its analysis as an ‘objective’ tool to allow voters to compare the parties’ policies. Only the pro-animal PvdD and Rita Verdonk’s Ton did not submit their manifestos for assessment.
The main points of the CPB appraisal:

  • The Liberal party, currently leading in the opinion polls, will have the greatest effect on the budget deficit and create 5% more jobs by 2040.
  • The CDA and GroenLinks will create 4% to 4.5% more jobs
  • The SP and PVV will create fewest jobs
  • The orthodox Christian SGP will hit spending power hardest
  • The CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie will also hurt spending power
  • Labour and the SP will boost spending power
  • GroenLinks, Labour and ChristenUnie are the most green
  • All parties, except the PVV, will cause a drop in house prices
  • All parties will increase housing rents, the Liberals in particular. High earners will be hardest hit
  • The CDA is the only party which will boost corporate profits
