Rotterdam, Amsterdam ports told to work more closely

The ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam should work more closely together and possibly even merge, according to the transport and waterways advisory council in a report for the transport ministry.

And the prosperity of the nation as a whole should be paramount when taking decisions about major investment in the ports and their surroundings, the report says.
There should be a single ‘ Gateway Holland’ rather than a collection of big and small ports, the report stated.
Rotterdam and Amsterdam ports compete with each other in some areas, which is a waste of government money, the report says. For example, Amsterdam has developed a container terminal, while Rotterdam is one of the biggest container ports in the world.
