Assisted suicide petition gets 40,000 namesSunday 14 February 2010 A lobby group hoping to win support for assisted suicide for the over 70s has raised the necessary 40,000 signatures to force a parliamentary debate on the issue. The organisation, which is supported by tv personalities and academics, says thousands of elderly people have had enough of life and would like professional help to commit suicide. The campaign was launched last week. Under Dutch law, euthanasia can only be practised if the patient is suffering 'unbearable pain'. The doctor must be convinced the patient is making an informed choice and a second doctor must also give his or her opinion.

Gerard, Are you REALLY unable to imagine a situation in which someone would prefer to die at a time and in circumstances of his or her own choosing? There's a limit to what even the best, and most expensive, medical care can accomplish. By otropogo | February 15, 2010 4:15 PM I was most amused t note that the poll you commissioned on the 09-02-2010 got severely hijacked by the 'no' vote. Obviously they are afraid of people's true feelings being known. By Jamie Anderson | February 15, 2010 5:08 PM My sympathy for Gerard. It is shocking how materialistic this world has become and a mention of a minimum age restriction is only cynical. Elderly people are vulnerable. After retiring many are at risk of feeling useless and a burden to society, which makes them depressive. If these people want to commit suicide they need help, but not to end their lives. Fortunately there are many loving people in the Netherlands, whose dedication to the wellbeing of the aged in old age homes often put a lump in my throat. By Frans | February 15, 2010 7:02 PM Were are the dutch people who who are over 70 did they not vote on this subject??? Shame on you dutch governement you are all sick Elly By e watson | February 15, 2010 9:21 PM If you are dying and don't want to suffer it is your choice as to what treatment you get and if that treatment is to be put out of your misery and for all suffering to be over. Go for it. By a j bennie | February 16, 2010 9:25 AM Wonderful. First they want to kill the young by sending them to a useless war in Afghanistan, now they want to raise the retirement age and then kill the old people. And this from a government dominated by so-called Christian parties. It would be laughable if it weren't so pathetic. By Ronen Ben-Hai | February 16, 2010 10:54 AM

Well, it's too much hard work and waste of time patching people up and keeping them alive, making them better, and helping them to become productive members of society again.
Government must think that as Dr's have read all the books, and no doubt seen every medical website, that they don't really need any practical experience. Oops! Drs could be redundant!
So, I for one not being able to get any proper medical care, or even access to it, in Netherlands via some Dutch Husiarts (GPs), my present one especially, I can understand why over 40,000 Dutch people would sign this petition.
I can seriously see why the elderly the ill the disabled in Holland would wish to be allowed to terminate their lives.
It's not that we don't want to go on living and even wanting to enjoy life but ....
... We're driven to doing it ... forced to ... by Uncaring Government Ministers hell bent of causing as much Mayhem & Misery as possible, ass fast as they can. All they seem to wish to do is, Destroy, Destroy, Destroy!
Destroy our Lives!!!
The way Health Care is being abused one would think that those responsible have access to good private medical care of care outside the Netherlands. Maybe they will have to flee to Spain, or Germany, or Greece, or Turkey, or France, or Belgium for medical care as thousands of NL citizens have to do!!!?
Well, either that or they have no ability to think for their own futures in case they, or their partners, or children, ever do become seriously injured and disabled, or seriously and chronically ill.
I wonder if they ever think what would they do if it happened to themselves?
