New European president in the Netherlands

The new chairman of the European council, popularly known as the EU president, is in the Netherlands on Wednesday for talks with prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende and the leaders of the two houses of parliament.
Belgian prime minister Herman van Rompuy was appointed to the position at the end of last year. Balkenende was said at the time to have been one of his main rivals, but has always denied he was an official candidate.
