McDonalds wrong to sack worker over cheeseTuesday 26 January 2010 A branch of the McDonalds hamburger chain in the Friesian town of Lemmer was wrong to sack a worker for giving a colleague on a break an extra piece of cheese on her hamburger, a court ruled on Tuesday. McDonalds' rules state staff cannot give away products to staff, family and friends. And by giving the extra slice of cheese, the hamburger turned into a more expensive cheeseburger, Nos tv reported. The judge said McDonalds had acted too severely in sacking the woman. 'The cost of a slice of cheese is not comparable to a severe step such as redundancy,' Nos quoted the judge as saying. In addition, the branch manager had not asked the woman to explain her actions, nor had it taken any steps against the colleague who asked for the burger. It is unclear from the reports if the hamburger was actually paid for. The sacked worker will not be reinstated but was awarded €4,500 in compensation - equivalent to five month's wages plus holiday pay and interest, Nos said. © DutchNews.nl Get the DutchNews.nl newsletter in your mailbox: Click here to subscribe
A clear case of stupidity here. A thin slice of cheese that was worth perhaps €0,04, that cost a firm €4,500? So in another country, (Anyone can hazard a guess)- the person could have had their hand amputated for this crime. Don't tell me... and then reinstated and awarded a prosthetic? It would seem that not all has gone sour here in NL, (Yet...) Years ago I was wrongly accused by a certain company and settled out of court for 17.000,00 guilders. I didn't ask for this large sum & there was never an apology... By stevie | January 26, 2010 1:58 PM Well done. Serves right for Mc.Donald who charge 35cents for a drop of ketchup!! By AD | January 26, 2010 2:48 PM Good compensation decision. By Jan | January 26, 2010 3:15 PM McDonalds! Long Queues & if you're a bit of a cripple you get ignored and all around you get served ... until someone ... usually a manager realises ... but mostly even when I do get served and somehow luckily manage to get what I asked for ... I'm told to go sit in the hard awkward plastic seats (cannot always sit in them but no one cares!) .. and ... it's often I am left to wait and eventually get cold food ... so it's just an easier life to avoid McD. By Gerard | January 26, 2010 4:39 PM For good reason, one doesn't think of McDonald's as having an out-of-the-box thinking mentality. Going just 'by the book' can have costly consequences. Loosen up McDonald's... direct your narrow thinking toward keeping the your restaurants clean. By Buzzer | January 26, 2010 5:04 PM This is INSANE!!!! By LJK | January 26, 2010 5:09 PM What ever happened to the method of steadily increasing disciplinary action? An 'offense' like this should have come with a verbal or written warning before resulting in termination. Then again, maybe we don't have the whole story. Maybe this employee had been previously cited for breaking company policy many times in the past. If that is the case, then Mickey D's would be justified ethically, even if it is a little silly considering the circumstances. By Scott G. | January 26, 2010 6:52 PM Companies have a natural right to make stupid decisions, so long as they don't commit fraud or initiate force. By kevin | January 26, 2010 10:24 PM I once worked in McDs many years ago when I was a student. I too was told off for giving myself a slice of cheese in a chicken burger for my lunch. Although I wasn't sacked I was given a warning which I thought to be pretty amusing at the time. By J Gill | January 26, 2010 10:50 PM They fired her for giving away a single slice of cheese? Gee, what would they have done if she had burned a batch of fries, execute her? That manager should be fired for terminal stupidity. And his manager should be demoted for approving something that ignorant. As for their food, once it was good, but it seems inferior these days. I prefer Sonic. By The Cat Lady | January 27, 2010 1:55 AM I am glad the poor girl was awarded compensation. Too bad she didn´t get her job back with the compensation. The manager should have been fired for being so cruel and stupid. By Sandra | January 27, 2010 5:47 AM I am reading this with joy of tears in my eyes..... Go on you girl!!! By Zen | January 27, 2010 11:29 AM €4.500 = 5 months wages? That's only €900, pm. Pretty poor wages for serving up poor unhealthy food. That's how this company has been making billions for years! If you don't like what they serve, don't go there, eat healthy and stop making them richer at the cost of your own health...SUPER-SIZE-ME!!! By stevie | January 28, 2010 6:28 PM If you are the owner/manager of a single beefburger joint, the sacking would appear very harsh. Unfortunately you are only the manager; the owner is somewhere in USA. The owner prepares a Standard Operating Procedure for his thousand of beefburger joints. The conceptual culture of McDonalds in food preparation is based very strictly on procedures - any deviation may not be acceptable in the frequent audit. If MacDonalds has no procedure for small infractions such as this incident, the manager has no choice but to follow the rules as provided by Head Office. A child learns values from rules in a family. If petty misdemenours go unpunished, it will escalate. Society is feeling the impact of some of these ills. The Judge should have been more Solomonic - the staff is guilty, the corporation should be more lenient and the backpay should be donated to charity. It is a lose-lose situation. The “robot” must be provided a heart. By Mettew | January 30, 2010 7:50 AM |

So rules are supposed to override sense of humanity is it McDonald?! The worker should have been reinstated and the manager sacked!
