Speed skater Timmer out of the Olympics
Monday 16 November 2009
Speed skater Marianne Timmer, the defending 1,000 meter Olympic champion, is out of the Winter games in Vancouver, her coach said on Sunday.
Timmer, 35, was injured in a fall during the 500 meter event at the World Cup in Hereenveen on Friday, when she was brought down by Jing Yu of China.
An MRI scan of her heel showed several breaks which were not visible on a normal x-ray. 'She is devastated,' said coach Jac Orie. 'This is really tragic.'
Timmer planned to officially retire from competitive skating after the Vancouver Games, which would have been her fourth Olympics.
