Tilburg mayor to stand down
Monday 26 October 2009
Tilburg mayor Ruud Vreeman is to stand down after losing the support of most of the city council over the building of a new city centre theatre.
At a meeting last Wednesday, 24 out of 39 councillors said an impossible situation had arisen because Veerman had not told them about the financial problems. The theatre project ended over budget by €1.9m, or 40%.
Veerman told councillors he had kept the bad news to himself because it was better for the city.
It is not yet clear when Veerman will stand down. The Midi theatre project earlier cost two city council executives their jobs.
