State faces claims over Schiphol expansionMonday 12 October 2009 Companies based on the Schiphol Rijk and Forward business parks will claim up to €1bn from the state if the government gives permission for the airport to expand, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Monday. The companies say they will face a serious disadvantage if transport minister Camiel Eurlings gives the go ahead to the building of a new runway in 2010, which will include the compulsory purchase of some land. This means the future development of the two business parks will be in doubt, leading to a downturn in investment. Some firms will also have to move, lawyer René Rensing told the paper. Schiphol says the expansion is necessary to ensure it has enough capacity to meet expected demand at peak periods. © DutchNews.nl Get the DutchNews.nl newsletter in your mailbox: Click here to subscribe
Schiphol is already big enough for such a small country. Better to build a 2nd airport than upset an already well established business park. Perhaps cheaper to buy-up some farmland used for growing bulbs? I'm sure Hilligom & surrounding areas would like an international airport. The whole area is nice and pancake-flat, and near enough to Amsterdam, not forgetting to build a new 6 lane motorway to connect up Amsterdam & Den Haag! By stevie | October 12, 2009 11:19 PM it not good to expand the airport b'se the country is very small and no more land to waste is un intellectual By abdihakim | October 13, 2009 9:33 AM Place your comments: |

Schiphol already has more runways than any airport in the UK and most major world airports. A fifth runway can't be cost effective. Use what's there more efficiently. I vowed to never fly from there when the eco tax was implemented, and I haven't. The country needs to built a decent international airport in the north of the country. I know that the tax has been repealed but now it is a matter of principle that I don't fly from there.
