Half a million animals killed as surplus stockTuesday 27 October 2009 Some 450,000 animals bred for animal testing were killed last year because they were surplus to requirements or the wrong sex, according to a new report from the food and consumer product safety authority VWA. The surplus animals, which cost the animal testing industry €2m, included mice, rats, rabbits, cats, dogs and apes, the report shows. In total, more than a million animals were bred for use in laboratories in the Netherlands last year. The number of actual experiments carried out on animals was down slightly on 2007, the VWA said. Some 52% of the experiments were for scientific study and 37% in connection with developing new drugs. © DutchNews.nl Get the DutchNews.nl newsletter in your mailbox: Click here to subscribe
Shameful! What good is the Partij voor de Dieren doing anyway? By AD | October 28, 2009 12:29 AM In fairness to the PvdD, they are only just in parliament, and only have like 1 or 2 seats IIRC. They are pretty much powerless right now. I can assure you however that they will use this as a massive cudgel in getting proper animal rights legislation through (I hope). That aside... what happened to adopting animals?Jebus H chrisco this is just unacceptable from the science community! I bet I could have opened a petting zoo from the more interesting animals they just butchered! By PatriotinExile | October 28, 2009 8:50 AM We need to stop the killing of animals for "testing". How about we use convicted criminals who are sentenced to "life" for testing. It would be a great way for them to pay back society for their crimes, especially if they themselves killed another human. By Paul Martin | October 28, 2009 1:49 PM We let children die, but we care about rats? By Peter | October 28, 2009 2:11 PM Peter, children will continue to die in a world where cures are looked for in animal models. Not until human clinical studies are funded as heavily as vivisection will we begin to see more life saving drugs for children as well as adults and the elderly. It is possible, and very common for anti-vivisectors to care about humans as well as non-human animals. By Robert Paulson | October 28, 2009 3:05 PM Civilised, Holland? Surplus animals? Cats, dogs and apes? Assuming they were all butchered here in the Netherlands, am I the only one who thinks this might be a bigger story if it happened in any other civilized country?
