Police get tough on phoning while driving

The police are going to crack down on people making phone calls while driving without using hands-free sets, police chief Bert Wijbenga told the AD on Friday.

Wijbenga is in charge of traffic policing on the police chiefs’ national council.
Holding a phone while driving has been illegal since 2002 and every year some 100,000 tickets are handed out. ‘But people still use their phones in cars en masse,’ Wijbenga said.
From next year, everyone caught on the phone while driving without an earpiece or car kit will be given a €150 fine. ‘Not every officer does that at the moment,’ the police chief told the paper. ‘But we are going to get tough.’
