Police get tough on phoning while driving

Friday 18 September 2009

The police are going to crack down on people making phone calls while driving without using hands-free sets, police chief Bert Wijbenga told the AD on Friday.

Wijbenga is in charge of traffic policing on the police chiefs' national council.

Holding a phone while driving has been illegal since 2002 and every year some 100,000 tickets are handed out. 'But people still use their phones in cars en masse,' Wijbenga said.

From next year, everyone caught on the phone while driving without an earpiece or car kit will be given a €150 fine. 'Not every officer does that at the moment,' the police chief told the paper. 'But we are going to get tough.'

Something with which i totally agree. Fines should be even stricter for that and these are issues that the traffic police should be interested and not if the limit is 50..and someone goes with 54 or 55 to get 24 euro tickets.

Finally it took them how long ??? Sorry 150 eu is not enough 500 eu pls!!
I see everyday from lorry driver to TNT van driver mainly stressed moms I have absolute no sympathy for such people one day they feel very very sorry if they kill someone and sit in prison for murder...

Yeah, absolutely, i think they should get even stricter and convict to 1 year minimum behind the bars...what's next, a fine for picking your nose because mummy didn't do a good job at teaching you that too?

Next, I hope they do something about the cyclist on their phones, and believe it or not, texting. I have been run into numerous times by cyclist using their mobiles. Further many cyclist wear headphones and can't hear you ring your bell or yell. Absolutely idiotic.

Maybe they should get tough on people who talk on the phone whilst on they bikes! Its about time something was done about it

This is a good thing, for both talking on the phone and texting while driving. This should be a "worldwide" law...

I don't own a cell phone so make the fine 1000E for the 1st. 2nd offense impound the vehicle. 3rd offense jailtime. It is as dangerous as drunk driving so make the fines severe. On what ever vehicle, bike, car, lorry, motorcycle, all vehicles.

I've seen police on phones while on duty.

I've seen people smoke and drive and smoke on bikes.. will that be illegal too?

I don't agree with the commenter that headphones should be banned on bikes. I enjoy music and would never give that up. I set my music, put the player in a pocket and go. I don't need to read the player or something and I don't ever have the sound cranked up. I can hear a bell, horn, etc just fine.

Let's make helmets mandatory before going after music listeners.

Now it will not be long before smoking while driving will be banned too. What is more dangerous, to hold a phone that is harmless when it falls, or a cigarette that burns a hole in your pants just where it hurts most and the smoker is trying to find the burning bush to douse the fire, and has no time to avoid the car that is coming from the left without giving him right of way, haha.

I agree. Fine people for texting too. Extend the fine to pedestrians crossing the road who are busy smsing and talking on the phone. We are talking about people's lives here.

Never Mind fines - these just don't work !. Every day I see some-one on a phone & clearly you see their lack of concentration. It's just not phone's, people are also using MP3 player's. A complete ban should be enforced as well as points on their license - I'm not to convinced by hand's free sets ither as these are equally a distraction from driving.

Stop being so high and mighty about saving lives. If some muppet wants to cross the road smsing and gets killed, good we just lost an idiot(to quote a great comedian). Theres too many people out there anyway. Natural Selection.

langer I loved your comment.. sadly, the person who hits the idiot will be in deep doodoo even if not at fault. If you hit a pedestrian you are at fault automatically. Unfair huh?

You know what is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Annoying?

Teenagers on bikes after school lets out. They all ride side by side when it's heavy biking traffic. A few times I didn't estimate the time well and ended up caught in the madness. Now when I see it happening and we're in the car I tell my husband who is driving I'll give him 5 if he hits them :P
