Estuary porpoise population counted
Monday 21 September 2009
The Oosterschelde estuary in Zealand has a permanent population of some 30 harbour porpoise (phocoena phocoena), marine experts said after a weekend count.
Porpoise are regularly spotted in the waters of the estuary but this is the first time an effort has been made to determine the size of the group.
Eight boats were involved in the search and at least five calves were spotted with their mothers, Frank Zanderink of the marine trust Stichting Rugvin told news agency ANP.
