ABN Amro may need more state capital

Government-owned parts of ABN Amro may need more capital later this year, finance minister Wouter Bos said on Thursday.

‘I’ve never ruled out that we need to add capital again but I can also not guarantee that it will happen,’ Bos told reporters.
ABN Amro was bought by Royal Bank of Scotland, Fortis and Santander in late 2007 but the combine was overtaken by the credit crisis. The Dutch government was forced to nationalise Fortis Nederland and with it, the Fortis share of ABN Amro.
The acquisition cost the government €16.8bn. A further €2.5bn was put into ABN Amro in June.
The two banks are currently being merged into a single unit.
