Schiphol airport earnings fall 76%

Amsterdam's Schiphol airport booked net profit of €22.4m over the first six months of this year, a 76% drop on the year-earlier period.

The decline is largely due to the fall in passenger numbers and freight traffic, as well as the cost of a reorganisation and write-downs on its property portfolio.

'The past several months have seen the launch of sector-wide marketing campaigns and a far-reaching reorganisation, as well as the introduction of additional cost-control measures,' CEO Jos Nijhuis said in a statement. 'Together, these initiatives form a first step towards optimising our position as 'Europe's preferred airport'. Ultimately, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is determined to carry on its role as a driving force in the Dutch economy.'

Nijhuis, who took over the airport helm in January, told the Volkskrant in May profit was no longer the driving force behind the airport's strategy.
